There are 5 reasons you should consider a bath or shower liner for your bathroom remodeling project.

1. Less expensive than traditional remodeling. According to industry averages a typical bathroom remodel could cost between $15,000-45,000 and you could be without the use of your bathroom for up to 6 weeks.
2. Can be done in a single day. In most cases a bath liner can be installed in just one day and can be used within 12 hours.
3. No demolition needed. In order to replace a bathtub, the old one first has to be broken up using a sledge hammer. The dust and noise can be very disruptive. A bathtub liner installation is very quick and non destructive to your home.
4. Very easy to clean. The spa like acrylic surface stays cleaner longer than tile, and requires a simple wipe down with household cleaner. No scrubbing with cleanser to remove mold and mildew.
5. Updates your bathroom quickly. The “wet area” in the bathroom is the most difficult part to update. A new bath liner, with a fresh coat of paint, updated fixtures and a vanity will make even the most dated bathroom look modern at a fraction of the cost of traditional remodeling.

The product you choose makes a big difference. The type of product that you choose will make a difference in the beauty and enjoyment you’ll receive.

There are 2 approaches to acrylic liners:

1. DR Acrylic. It is specifically engineered for impact resistance, so it won’t break when struck or traumatized. But while this approach is great for football helmets, what are the odds that your shower or tub will be struck with a blunt object and with enough force to cause a break? And while DR Acrylic makes the product more break resistant, it compromises scratch resistance and shine, making the product visibly less beautiful and substantially harder to keep clean and beautiful. It protects the installer, making their job easier, but it makes your job tougher and less satisfying in the long run.

2. DuraCast XL Crosslinked Arylic. This product results in the most beautiful finish possible. And it offers the highest level of scratch resistance, stain resistance, ease of cleaning, durability, and

Acrylic tub liners are fast becoming the favorite choice of homeowners looking to makeover their bathrooms. They are quick (one-day), far less intrusive on your family, and considerably less expensive then a full bathroom remodel (less then 10% of the cost)

With acrylic liners you can also easily covert your tub to a shower or replace your old tub with a walk in tub…or a barrier free shower.

Bathtub Refinishing and Replacement in Minneapolis and St. Paul

If you are tired of looking at your old, out of date colored, rusty bathtub, there are 3 ways that you can upgrade your old bathtub:

1. Refinishing the old bathtub is the cheapest of all of the remodel alternatives. This option involves a process of basically “painting” your tub with a special coating. While this approach is cheap, you must be aware of the fact that it is also temporary.
Bathtub refinishing is subject to the same challenges as the original porcelain, but they won’t last nearly as long. You can expect a good refinish job to solve your tub problem for only a few years. Of course, it won’t help you solve challenges that surround the tub itself. If this is all you do, the work can be complete in 2 days and you can expect to pay as little as $350.00 to $1,500.00, depending on how much of the surface you are finishing.
2. Having a new tub installed is the second option, but if you are thinking about replacing your old bath tub with a new one, you have to consider that it can be very expensive and lengthy project. The plan of just replacing the tub, ends up being a total bathroom remodel. Why?

Because, new tubs differ in width from the old tubs, which means that before you can install a new tub, you need to remove the base molding, floor covering, and underlayment. Much of the tile on the walls will be damaged during the removal. They, too, will need to be replaced. There are many things to consider before removing a bathtub. In order to remove the existing tub, you’ll have to open up the three walls surrounding it. If the room is small, then the toilet, sink, and cabinet may also have to be removed.

When you get right down to it, one thing leads to another when removing a bathtub…but there is an alternative…

3. A bathtub liner. There are less expensive options available if you don’t want to go through the hassle of tearing out the old tub, remodeling your bathroom and installing a brand new bath tub…

The one-day solution…If you want a new tub without the cost of replacing the old one, consider getting your tub fitted with a bathtub liner. This method of refurbishing an old bath without actually getting rid of it has become a popular and affordable alternative to restoring the condition of your bathtub.

Bathtub liners are made to fit perfectly over your preexisting bathtub. Usually made of nonporous and durable acrylic that does not dent or chip, these liners are also stain and fade resistant and finished to a high-gloss. Compared to porcelain and ceramic tubs, bathtub liners are more resilient to acidity and because there is no grout and tiles to maintain, cleaning is much easier.

You’ll have to get your bath fitted first by a specialist. Usually this means having the specialist come to your house to make the required measurements so they can match your tub to a liner perfectly. Installing the liner will take less than a day and you’ll be able to use it right away once it is brought to your house and fitted.

Does someone in your family have a disability, or other physical issues, and are you concerned with their safety…especially when bathing or showering? If you are, then it may be time to seriously consider a barrier-free shower.

Why are Universal Design Standards so important?

Over the last few decades, bathroom designers, architects and manufacturers of fixtures and other bathroom safety products have begun to respond to the need for greater accessibility, and safety in bathrooms. The result is a set of standards, known as the “Universal Design.”

Many of these features are nice to have in any home and can be added with little or no cost when you remodel a bathroom regardless of your current situation, you might want to review the list and see if some of these recommendations can work in your new bathroom…

Place electrical receptacles at 15 or 18 inches above the floor

Allow a door opening width of 34 – 36 inches

Leave a minimum of 18 inches of clear floor space beside all doors on the “pull side” to allow space to get out of the way when opening doors

Leave a turning space in the bathroom of 5 feet in diameter (for wheelchair)

Use contrasting colors between floor surfaces and trim to make them easier to see

Choose easy-to-use hardware: lever door handles, push electrical plates, loop handle pulls on drawers and cabinet doors, lever faucet handles, touch latches, keyless locks

Position light switches 35-44 inches above the floor, maximum

Pressure balanced anti-scald valves at tubs and showers

Hand-held showerheads at all tubs and showers in addition to fixed heads.

Bathing fixture requirement: minimum 5 feet long by 3 feet deep (4 feet preferred) curb less shower or tub with integral seat, waterproof floor and a floor drain

30” by 48” clear floor spaces at each fixture (spaces may overlap)

Clear space of 3 feet in front and to one side of toilet

Toilet centered 18 inches from any side wall, cabinet or tub

Broad blocking between studs in walls around toilet, tub and shower for placement and location of grab bars

Minimum lavatory counter height of 32 inches

Clear knee space 29” high under sink (may be accomplished with fold-back self-storing doors)

No pedestal sinks

Mount sink as close to front of countertop as possible.

These are the primary elements of “universal design” in bathrooms. You might, however, choose to install grab bars in tub and shower and beside and in front of the toilet simply because it is helpful for people of all ages and physical ability.

Barrier-free showers can be a challenge to install for do-it-yourselfers

The primary obstacle or construction issue is the ability to maintain a smooth transition from the floor to the stall…allowing for ease of use, especially by wheelchairs. Often, pre-made shower stalls are designed to be slightly sunken into the floor framing. This along with creating the proper drainage angles, installing shelves, seats, proper height on operating controls, and making sure that the water is properly contained in the shower stall, make it a very big challenge to the average do-it-yourselfers.

If you are seriously considering a barrier-free shower for yourself or a family member, and installing it yourself is either not an option or one that seems like to big a hassle, you should seek out a contractor that specializes in barrier-free showers.

Feeling normal

Showering is a daily ritual that is not only hygienically necessary, but also offers a few moments of peaceful, soothing refuge. Shower should never be a task, making the shower stall one of the most important modifications to consider when designing an accessible home. While there are a few products on the market to simplify the showering experience, a barrier-free stall is most commonly recommended.

Five Questions To Ask Any Bathroom Remodeling Contractor Before Hiring Them. Because choosing a bathroom remodeling contractor is the most critical decision you will make, we’ve prepared a list of questions to ask to make sure your project goes smoothly. Click Here To Read This Valuable Article.

The 5 Critical Questions To Ask Before You Hire A Bathroom Contractor

Remodeling your bathroom is one of the best ways to improve the comfort of your home…and increase its value. And for most of us it’s not a do-it-yourself project. Bathroom remodeling is often the most difficult room to work on…turning the average homeowner into a bundle of nerves during the process.

As a homeowner, it’s not surprising to you that homes are sold primarily on kitchens and bathrooms, so getting the bathroom right is of paramount importance.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) understand that the remodeling process can be quite overwhelming and confusing. The NKBA offers these important tips to help homeowner create their new bathroom.

Don’t do it yourself

Do think about resale

Don’t overspend

Think about value over cost

Pick a qualified professional installer

In selecting the right professional for your needs, ask these 5 questions…

1. Is the contractor licensed?

One of the first things you’ll want to find out is if the contractor is properly licensed, and how long have they been doing the work you require. But remember, licenses are not a mark of quality workmanship, I simply means they have fulfilled the minimum requirements of the trade—which is a good place to start

2. Do they specialize in bathrooms?

Simply put, all remodeling contractors are not the same. Different remodeling contractors bring different levels of quality, commitment, sincerity, and dedication to their work. And usually, even though a contractor can “do it all”, their true expertise is in one type of discipline. Don’t be shy in asking them if they specialize in bathrooms, and what percentage of their business is bathrooms. If they hesitate or don’t know they answer…you do, so find someone else!

3. What is there standing with the Better Business Bureau?

Most homeowners call the contractor if they have a concern or problem, and gibe them several chances to fix it. Only when a contractor shows a lack of concern or ability to solve the problem does it escalate where the BBB is contacted. The BBB can tell you if the contractor has a list of complaints. If he does, how many of them are unresolved? If he has unresolved complaints…obviously hire someone else!

4. Do they offer proof of insurance?

A good contractor will carry no less then $1,000,000 of coverage that will protect you if something goes wrong. If he is uninsured you will have no legal recourse. And make sure you don’t just hear it verbally…make sure you see a written, up-to-date copy of his insurance documents.

5. References: Can they supply you with 5 references

Even though you’ve heard this before, it might surprise you that most homeowners neglect this step. Instead they go with their “gut instinct”, which often times costs them money and peace of mind. Be sure to get at least 5 references and then call at least 3 of these to get their opinion. And when calling references be sure to ask specific questions, like:

• Did they get the work done on time?
• Did they communicate well—how long to get back to you?
• Did they always leave the house clean and tidy?
• Would they hire them again?
• Was there anything that didn’t go according to plan

These references are an invaluable tool, especially when you get a customer’s specific experience with the contractor you are considering,

Bonus Question # 1 Do they have a written warrant?

Don’t hesitate to demand to see their warranty in writing…and don’t hire them until they get you a copy of it. Some companies use warranties that refer to “other documents” that you have not seen or read. Look for a contractor who provides a written and easy to understand agreement…with no surprises.

Bonus Question # 2 How often is the final bill more then the bid?

This is a very revealing question. If they hesitate, or don’t really know the answer, that will show you something about there integrity. They know the answer; they just don’t want to disclose it.

Are you considering remodeling your bathroom or replacing your old bathtub in Minneapolis St. Paul?

Remodeling any part of your home can be a trying experience, but when you consider all of the things affected by a bathroom remodel, the task can seem daunting. In addition, the home improvement industry doesn’t exactly have a stellar record. Home improvement complaints to the Better Business Bureau and the Minnesota Attorney’s General Office ranks as one of the highest Minnesota industries in regards to formal complaints.

But the good news is, you can easily protect yourself, and your family, by being aware of the 6 biggest mistakes homeowners make when having their bathroom remodeled, or their old bathtub replaced.

Mistake # 1 — Doing it yourself

Can you do it yourself—maybe, if you have the experience, tools and skills to do it properly…then yes you could probably do it yourself. But, chances are, if you’re reading this report, then there’s a good chance you’re not exactly one of those people. And besides, even though the bathroom is relatively small, all of the skills you need to build a house all come together in a bathroom—electrical, plumbing, construction, flooring, wall covering, not to mention design, all part of a bathroom remodel.

Unexpected expenses invariably pop up, and if you accidently damage one thing, that can lead to another item having to be fixed—and paid for!

Can you fix it yourself…of course you can, just like you can fix your car’s engine, re-roof your house, re-carpet your living room, or a myriad of other home improvement projects that some homeowners tackle. But before you take on the job of remodeling your bathroom, or replacing your bathtub, make sure you understand all of the different elements you’ll need to know…or at least become a quick expert on!

Mistake # 2 – Failing to anticipate time and chaos

When remodeling your bathroom, remember all of the elements of a home seem to come together in a bathroom. A full bathroom remodel affects many systems, including electrical, plumbing, flooring, tile, wall covering, lighting, cabinets…just to name a few.

Your stress levels build up as the job which you were thinking was going to take a week, is going on its third week, with no end in site. When a bathroom remodel drags on and on, and your family is tired of sharing one bathroom, you’re often ready to pull your hair out…or you’ll at least wonder why you started this project in the first place!

Mistake # 3 – Choosing inferior products

With the economy being what it’s been over the past year or two, saving money is not only a good idea…it’s often the only option.

But that doesn’t mean to save money on your bathroom remodel you need to accept inferior products. Your choice of products for your bathroom, perhaps more than anywhere else in your home, will determine how happy you will be with the changes. Inferior products may result in a lack of protection and ultimate water damage that can cost you more in the long run. This is no exaggeration, and far more common than you may think.

A slow unseen water leak can cause catastrophic problems, ranging from weakening the structural integrity of your home, to the dramatic health problems caused by mold.

Mistake # 4 – Failing to get a written bid

Remember our reference in the beginning of this article regarding complaints to the BBB regarding home contractors? The final bill is one of the biggest causes of complaints regarding bathroom remodels.

A properly written bid is one of the biggest protections you have!

Sometimes a contractor will come to your house and evaluate your problem and tell you it will be “X dollars” for the repair. Even if he or she seems like the most trustworthy person in the world, get the proposal in writing. Never hire a contractor without a written proposal.

Make sure that basic terms are contained within the written bid/proposal. At the very least, the proposal should have the following terms and conditions:

1. Total price

2. Specific description of work to be performed

3. Time within which the work will be completed

4. Warranty(s)
If the contractor doesn’t leave you with a written bid, then choose another contractor—it’s that simple!

Mistake # 5 – Hiring the wrong contractor

If you’ve lived in your home for more then a few years, then you’ve probably hired the wrong contractor…and it probably ended up being one of the most frustrating experiences you’ve had…and probably one of the most expensive.

The following list makes up a large portion of the lawsuits that are filed each year against bathroom projects that have gone wrong:

o Over billing
o Misrepresentation
o Lack of communication
o Not completing all of the work
o Not around when they were needed
o Shoddy workmanship

These are just a few of the complaints that the BBB and Attorney General’s Office receive regarding bathroom remodels.
When the time comes to choose a contractor, how will you distinguish between a certified, experienced contractor and a corner-cutting swindler? A little research and some probing questions can help you make the right decision and save you time and money.
